PageRank Update January 2011…Big Deal

January 20  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

While the forums, twitter and blogs are a flutter with a PageRank update, I’m still surprised anyone cares anymore. The craze over the little green bar still makes some people feel all warm and tingly inside, but really, are you seeing any more traffic or ranking increases? Chances are they are not. It’s 2011, the year everyone should forget it as a quality measure and keep in mind what’s really going on in the algorithm!

We’re Launching an SEO Affiliate Program

We’ve been working with a few related businesses who are sending us leads, and lately it has been working out great for both parties. We currently offer 10% commission for the first $10,000 of business, and then bump it up to 12% after that. We’re going to be screening our applicants quite thoroughly, as well we won’t be allowing a lot of people to join on. We don’t want to dilute the process, as well we only take on a certain amount of clients per month.

Far far, there are a couple web design firms who obviously have the need to push SEO, so that situation works out great. We also have a couple SEO bloggers starting to convert the program at a worthy rate. These types of companies are what we’re looking for, and if you think you have what it takes then get in touch with us today!

Google Is Testing Two New Meta Tags For Content Syndication

November 18  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

It’s about bloody time Google! A lot of people this past year have seen their own content get outranked by other, highly authoritative syndication sites which has been causing a brouhaha. There are also a lot of mashup sites in the mix which are pretty much entirely syndicated content which I feel is fine as long as the source is credited, and now that won’t be a problem. This is going to be a major relief to a lot of content owners out there, lets hope it works out properly so these meta tags stick around. I’m going to be playing with them on our site, as well get some of our clients to look into implementation so I can bring back some stats and more details.

  • syndication-source indicates the preferred URL for a syndicated article. If two versions of an article are exactly the same, or only very slightly modified, we’re asking publishers to use syndication-source to point us to the one they would like Google News to use. For example, if Publisher X syndicates stories to Publisher Y, both should put the following metatag on those articles:
    <meta name="syndication-source" content="http://www.publisherX.com/wire_story_1.html">
  • original-source indicates the URL of the first article to report on a story. We encourage publishers to use this metatag to give credit to the source that broke the story. We recognize that this can sometimes be tough to determine. But the intent of this tag is to reward hard work and journalistic enterprise. For example, to credit the publication that broke a story you could use a metatag like this:
    <meta name="original-source" content="http://www.example.com/burglary_at_watergate.html">

I’m really pleased that they’ve introduced these two because even my own content is getting out ranked by aggregator sites. I get a lot of my posts picked up by Top SEO News, which I’m grateful for, but as you can see they’re outranking my own post which pisses me off. Again, this is Google’s problem, not the folks who run the site. The post I’m talking about was my recent Knowem.com review, which you can see below is getting sauced in the SERPs….booooo!

Take note that Google states, “Although these meta tags are already in use by our systems, you may not notice their impact right away”, so I’m not sure how long before I can tell any difference. I guess the only course of action for webmasters at the moment is to just keep watching the SERPs and take note of any new behavior.

Exact Match Domains Getting A Second Look: Matt Cutts

While I imagine most of you are also closet affiliate marketers, so I’m sorry to break this news to you if that’s the case. Exact match domains are well known to easily rank for their target keyword, and for the most part, they should. At Pubcon this past week Matt Cutts managed to briefly bring up that him and the Google Webspam team will be taking a closer look at the “power” that comes with these types of domains, saddening some while pleasing others. Unfortunately for the SEO Pug, he is not so pleased!

I for one am not too worried though for a few good reasons. One being that if you maintain a quality site and build that exact match domain with all the goods, you should be fine. Just like any other site right? While currently you can rank an exact match domain without much effort, it still takes really good content, a proper site structure and quality links to push it up to the top. I for one have no problem with this because you’re site could not be any more focused for one topic. I also say this because it’s a strategy I personally employ for my side cash, and with my caffeine addiction, I need all the extra money I can get my hands on! There is quite a bit of good discussion going on this topic so read up and let me know what you think here in the comments.

Kudos To StopForumSpam.com

As a forum owner and friend of forum owners I know how bloody hard it is to keep tabs on user creation, even with all the technology we have. Going up against paid forum link scammers and the likes of Xrumer can make one nearly give up against the dark forces. I recently came across the community over at StopForumSpam.com which is more than just a message board. With a large user base and robust API, you can now take a huge part of your life back while also helping their honeypot system suppress any future attacks on your forums. If you don’t have the time to take part in the overall community there, you can simply make use of the report a spammer form and be on your merry way. I really like the stats the offer as well which provide a nice visual aid to understanding where it’s all coming from;

Business.com Directory Closing Down

Well this must be great news for BOTW, but bad news for a lot of people who loved the strong link from one of the oldest and most authoritative web directories left. The long running Business.com directory has announced it will be closing its B2B section and integrating with Dex One instead….I imagine they were making millions still with the directory and the rest of the site, so it will be interesting to see how this works. From a branding perspective, I would much prefer to keep the Business.com name with the current setup, but they must have bigger plans in mind.

Dex One will continue to manage the Business.com site and support existing customers through an extended transition period. Following this period, Dex One will continue to control all rights associated with the Business.com brand and URL. Business.com customers with questions can call 1-888-441-4466.

I imagine Google Places and other local search is taking its toll on this style of site, as well as many other local business directories. I’m actually quite glad I never got into that niche myself. So if you were thinking about getting listed in here, I’m sorry to bring the bad news. You can however take a look at Best Of The Web as a healthy alternative to getting a juicy link if your site passes the human inspection.

Google’s Getting Scared Of Bing?

September 25  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

In a recent interview I caught on Business Insider with Google’s Eric Schmidt talking about what he see’s as the Biggest threat to Google’s market share. With the partnership Bing has setup with Facebook, I’d be worried too. Top that all off with the recent Mayday updates and I see a wounded Google who finally may have someone to fight with…and that’s a good thing! I really don’t like having my eggs, or my clients, all in one basket so look forward to garnering more traffic from the Bing/Facebook side, especially those who got “raped” last May.
