WP Original Source Plugin

We’ve been having problems with a site scraping out content (onewaylinkbuilder.com), and we’re not having any luck contacting them. Their web host won’t do anything, we’ve already resorted to replacing images to naughty ones, but alas no luck. What’s even worse, is sometimes the content is outranking our site, and even their blog is showing up in Google Blog Search instead of ours…frustrating to say the least.

Google recently launched two new meta tags for content publishers, and now there is a WordPress plugin for it! Thanks to the handy coding work of Thibaut Dancette from Wecho.com who published this handy plugin for us WP users. You can grab WP Original Source HERE, and it installs easily without any modification.

I’ll update this post later to report back on how it’s effectively working, so keep your fingers crossed for us. Content scraping is more rampant than ever so it’s nice to know there are efforts on Google’s end to help clean up the junk. If their webspam team is listening, I’d love to see a anti-scraping feature built into Feed Burner to help combat these problems.

Preventing Naughty Link Builders With Bad Behavior

January 13  |  Link Building Tools  |   Ryan Clark

You and I both know that there are a lot of excessive link spammers out there, especially when it comes to blogs. If you like at programs like Xrumor, they target weak guestbook scripts, insecure forums and out of date blog comment systems. I’m not sure why I haven’t heard of Bad Behavior until now, but it is definitely worth tinkering around with. There is a wordpress plugin for the likes of me and the other millions of users, but there is also some code to easily integrate into your PHP framework.

I’m planning on getting a forum of sorts going on here soon and the last one was overrun with link spam. Bad Behavior analyzes incoming HTTP headers, the IP address, and other data to determine if it is coming up rotten. Since it is mostly acting at the TCP level you don’t have to worry about the site loading slowly. They’ve tested it successfully on a site with over 100,000 unique visitors a day. There is actually quite a lot to the inner workings of Bad Behavior and they graciously have provided a wealth of information on how it works.

Bad Behavior complements other link spam solutions by acting as a gatekeeper, preventing spammers from ever delivering their junk, and in many cases, from ever reading your site in the first place. This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.

This plugin is of course free and done out of hate for spam, so if you too hate spam as much, make sure to donate to their efforts. I’m going to be testing the plugin out over the next month so I’ll update this thread with any notes on how it performs. If you have any questions ask away in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.

301 Redirection Management Plugin For WordPress

January 4  |  Internal Link Building, Wordpress SEO  |   Ryan Clark

I’ve just implemented this awesome plugin across my WordPress blog network, including Linkbuildr, and I’m in love and no longer worry about the problems I would otherwise face without it. Redirection is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections and keep track of 404 errors which if you have a large site can become a mess. If you ever are migrating a domain, or changing the structure if your website you’ll not want to do it without this plugin. I’ve gone back and deleted a lot of old posts that I felt were unethical with my practices, so this is also helping in redirecting the web traffic I’m still getting. I’ve taken the features list from the authors blog, Urban Giraffe;

Features include:

  • Supports both WordPress-based and Apache-based redirections
  • 404 error monitoring – captures a log of 404 errors and allows you to easily map these to 301 redirects
  • RSS feed for 404 errors
  • Custom ‘pass-through’ redirections allowing you to pass a URL through to another page, file, or website.
  • Full logs for all redirected URLs
  • Create redirections based upon a URL, browser, referring site, or login status
  • Automatically add a 301 redirection when a post’s URL changes
  • Full regular expression support
  • Fully localized
  • Export all redirections to CSV, XML, or Apache .htaccess files
  • Import Apache .htacces files

This plug is in the end all for 301’s and 404’s and if you check out the homepage for the Redirection WordPress Plugin, you’ll get a thorough walk through of all the features. For the most part you’ll be able to just install it and configure it as you see fit, and if you’ve never played around with 301’s, 404’s and .htaccess then you’ll need to sit down and do a little reading. So if you’re ready to get rocking you can go download the plugin.

SEO Smart Links WordPress Plugin

November 18  |  Internal Link Building, Wordpress SEO  |   Ryan Clark

I needed a new plugin to handle all my internal link building efforts, and Smart SEO Links does the job just fine. Directing the flow of link juice around your site is important to pass on authority as well direct readers to posts they wouldn’t otherwise discover. Another great benefit of using this plugin is never having to copy and paste your affiliate codes all the time which is starting to become a pain in the ass for me. Keep in mind that you don’t want too many anchor text’s popping up all over the place or you’ll start to give Google a worry. Just think about your main keywords and you’ll have an easier time keeping the number of anchored links down. Thankfully this plugin makes all of the above a breeze to setup and get going;

Features:

  • Find keywords in your posts, pages and comments and link them to your other posts, pages, categories and tags
  • Full control with customizable options
  • Ignore list for keywords you do not want to link
  • Improves your site’s interlinking
  • Control external links with custom keywords
  • Add nofollw attribute or open links in new window
  • Caching for speed – make sure you have define(’ENABLE_CACHE’, true); set in your wp-config.php

KeywordLuv WordPress Plugin Review

Now here’s another cool WordPress plugin to help attract quality comments and share some link love. After you read this post you can see this plugin in action right after the CommentLuv section, and you’ll see what a nifty and quick hack it is. So basically this plugin separates your name from the anchor text you want to get some link love on. This plugin is compatible with WordPress 2.2 and up, but if you are not running a version that new you should most likely upgrade ASAP!

*Update* It isn’t working with my theme, even with the option for non compatible themes turned on*

Download The KeywordLuv Plugin.
